DESCRIPTION

The painting ' Under the wave off the coast of Kanagawa ' is an iconic Asian work of art. The work is also nicknamed ' The big wave ' or ' The great wave ', but its original Japanese title is ' Kanagawa-oki nami-ura '. The Japanese printmaker, draftsman and painter created this work in approximately 1830-1831. It is his best-known work and it is the first work of the ' Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji '. It also belongs to the Japanese printmaking, also called Ukiyo-e. This is a form of woodblock print from Japan that also became popular in Europe since the 18th century. In the painting you see huge waves that threaten to crush the rowers. Mount Fuji is in the background, but may also be depicted in the wave in the foreground.
